I just finished reading Blame by Michelle Huneven. A friend recommended this one to me, I had not heard of it before. Which makes me wonder, what other books are out there that I am unaware of? What am I missing? Because there are tons of novels written every year that somehow slip through the cracks and I never learn about them because there’s not a lot of marketing or advertising when your last name isn’t Franzen or Grisham. Oh snap!
The book begins with twelve year old Joey getting her ears pierced by her uncle’s friend Patsy. I became wrapped up in Joey’s life until chapter two when Patsy’s story takes over.
Patsy is a raging alcoholic, she’s also a professor with her Phd so she’s no slouch. One day, a day that is foggy in Patsy’s mind due to an alcoholic blackout, Patsy hits two people as she turns into her steep driveway. As a result of Patsy’s drinking, two innocent lives are taken and Patsy receives a sentence that puts her in prison. There, she sobers up and learns to live with the consequences of her actions.
Years go by and Patsy is living her life, trying to make good out of a bad situation. She has joined AA, is completely sober, marries and resumes teaching. She is content, trying to live her life, when a now grown up Joey re-enters her life with new and shocking information.
And I can’t tell you any more than that because you don’t want me giving the story away, do you?
It took me a while to read for some reason, I didn’t just whip through it as I do with other novels. Maybe its the authors style of writing, I didn’t want to miss any details. I liked the book and it keep me interersted until the last page.
