What I Thought I Knew by Alice Eve Cohen

I really had no clue what this book was about when I sat down to read it. No idea! Within the first couple of pages however, Alice’s story hooked me.

Theater artist and writer Alice, is happy and content with her fiancee, an adopted daughter and a successful career. At age forty-four she discovers she is pregnant. Surprise!

That nagging stomach-ache she had for six months was a baby growing in what she thought was a barren womb. Alice experienced six months of not knowing she was pregnant after being checked out by physician. The doctor thought she had an abdominal tumor.

This is a pregnancy Alice did not want, plan for, or expect. Mother to one chid, Alice thought she was done with the baby thing. Not so much.

Throughout her fragile pregnancy, nothing goes as planned for Alice. What she “thought she knew” was pretty  much nothing as every event coming down the pike knocks her proverbial socks off.

The book is funny and sad and happy then sad again. The reader worries right along with Alice as she details her pregnancy and the choices she makes. It’s wonderfully written and gripping and it makes for a quick read. The reader comes away from the  book knowing that whatever we think we know…we really don’t. Alice Eve Cohen is proof of that.
