You know the basics of taking care of your skin — cleansing, moisturizing and using sunscreen daily, but you may not be aware of advances in dermatology that can improve your look, protect your skin and boost your confidence. Here are three safe and innovative ways to look your best from Dr. Jaliman.
1. Latisse to extend eyelashes
When women want long, luxurious lashes, they sometimes opt for lash extensions which have inherent risks. Eyelashes are intended to protect your eyes from dirt, sun and dust, and extensions don’t keep your eyelashes healthy. Extensions can put too much pressure on your natural lashes that pull them out, and if you rip out your lashes on a regular basis, you can ruin the root and your eyelashes won’t grow back. Some women also experience an allergic reaction to the bonding solution of lash extensions and end up with red eyes or skin that breaks out. If you want longer, fuller and darker lashes, there is Latisse, an FDA approved solution to make your lashes fuller. With its active ingredient, bimatoprost, it makes lashes grow. Research suggests that the growth of eyelashes occurs by increasing the percent of hairs and prolonging the anagen, or growth phase. If your lashes are breaking, Latisse can help. Keep in mind that it takes up to eight weeks to see a difference, and 16 weeks to see full results. It’s a once-a-day treatment you apply topically to the base of your upper eyelashes. Patients in a clinical trial saw results in as few as eight weeks with full results after 12 to 16 weeks. Consult with your dermatologist to see if a prescription is right for you, and start growing the full lashes you have always wanted.
2. Heliocare for sun protection
With all the news stories about women being deficient in Vitamin D, too many people are venturing out in the sun unprotected. You should never go out in the sun with your skin unprotected, even if you are out in the sun for just a few minutes, because sun damage is cumulative. Exposure to ultraviolet light, UVA or UVB from sunlight accounts for 90 percent of the symptoms of premature skin aging such as wrinkles and skin cancers. While you should regularly use a sunscreen with an SPF of 30, one of the most promising advances in sun protection is Heliocare, an over the counter sunscreen pill. Heliocare is approved by the FDA for added sun protection. While it shouldn’t replace sunscreen or protective clothing, it does provide an additional layer of protection for people with sun tolerance. It’s available at most drugstores.
3. Coolsculpting by Zeltiq
For people who want to lose excess fat, liposuction used to be their only option. Now there’s a revolutionary treatment called Cryolipolysis (or fat freezing), a coolsculpting technology that freezes fat instead of suctioning it out. The fat is painlessly and gradually broken down and metabolized just as it would be if you were on a diet. Coolsculpting has many advantages over liposuction because it doesn’t involve needles, medicines or incisions. It’s also less expensive and there is less risk and zero recovery time. The results of coolsculpting are permanent. A month after the procedure, patients will notice their clothes are loose, and in four months, the results are the same as liposuction. If you want to get rid of back fat, love handles or want your waistline back, coolsculpting is your safest option. Zeltiq Coolsculpting is the only product I recommend because it does not harm the liver or raise triglyceride and cholesterol levels.
